Illiteracy and the Failed Hero in the Post’Independence Novel: A Study of Clement Agunwa’s More Than Once

Abstract

This study deals with the factors, manifestations, and consequences of illiteracy in Clement Agunwa’s More Than Once. Through the prism of Mr. Nwakor, the protagonist who epitomizes the failed hero in the post’independence novel, one discovers how the deficiency in education delays the taking-off of the African youth. The author takes the reader to the protagonist’s childhood to explain the way this struggling businessman from eastern Nigeria, who becomes a highly respected trader, but suddenly ruined. His demise, mostly caused by his lack of education, condemns him to lead a mournful life.
