<abstract><p>Introduction: The loss of muscle mass is a common problem associated with adult patients who stay in the ICU, this problem is considerably greater than in all other patient populations. Objective: This study aimed to investigate the use of neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) in peripheral strength gain in critically ill patients admitted to the intensive care unit. Methodology: This is an exploratory, descriptive research that uses an integrative literature review, as a way of collecting data in search of scientific articles, books, periodicals, theses. The searches for articles in magazines was carried out in the following databases: Scientific Eletronic Library Online (SCIELO), Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System (MEDLINE), Physiotherapy Evidence Database (PeDRO). Results: It was observed through research that electrical stimulation neuromuscular function associated with other resources and techniques has had good results regarding muscle strength in critically ill patients admitted to the ICU. Conclusion: The use of NMES in a unit intensive care is a measure that has been shown to be effective in gaining muscle strength in critical patients who were already in the ICU for a long time, as it is associated with care physiotherapists present and other techniques that helped a lot in the recovery of many critical patients in the ICU.</p></abstract>
