Abstract
The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of discovery learning approach on students’ performance in C++ programming at the Copperbelt University, Kapasa Makasa Campus. The study used the quasi-experimental approach with non-equivalent control group pre-test/ post-test design. The sample of the study consisted of 66 students drawn from two second year Agro-forestry students. Out of this number, 33 were taught using the discovery approach and another 33 using the traditional lecture methods. The experiment lasted for 3 weeks.
The results demonstrated that the students who were taught through discovery approach achieved higher C++ programming results than those taught through traditional lecture methods. In addition, the study also established that gender has no effect on students’ performance in C++ programming when they are taught using discovery approach. It was recommended that due to its effectiveness, discovery learning approach should be adopted when teaching C++ programming because this method engages the learners as well as motivates them to acquire basic knowledge of C++ programming.
