Workplace Ergonomic Risk Assessment (wera) of Female Weavers

Abstract

Weavers work long hours in very small spaces with minimum ventilation and low lighting levels with awkward postures. Hence the present study was taken up to find out the prevalence of WERA among female weavers. An observational descriptive study was conducted on different activities performed by the female weavers in Koyyalagudem village of Nalgonda district, Telangana. WERA was selected to study repetition, contact stress, forceful contraction and awkward postures of weavers by video recording of each activity. Data were analyzed using Kinovea software to draw and assess the angle deviation of each body part i.e., neck, shoulder, back, wrist and legs. When WERA score was compared among female weaversengaged in different yarn preparation methods and weaving in different looms, the scores found to be equal (49) in Floor charka (warp yarn preparation) and Chitkaasu (pay folding), Tieing activity (50), weaving on heddle loom (48) and pit loom (46) which were found to be at high risk. Therefore the activity is not accepted and immediate action has to be taken to reduce risk factors. Whereas the score found in spinning wheel (weft yarn preparation) was 42 and weaving on standing loom was 32, so the activity was in medium risk. Therefore the task is needed to further investigate
