Reading Skills and English Language Performance of College Freshmen of Sultan Kudarat State University

Abstract

This study determined the level of Reading Skills and the English Language Performance of College Freshmen of Sultan Kudarat State University. Findings of which served as bases for implementing teaching guide in Reading.
This descriptive research employed quantitative approach on the data gathered from the students and qualitative approach was used on the data gathered from the teachers. The variables on Students’ Profile, Level of Reading Skills and English Language Performance were tested for relationship using the Pearson –r test.
The freshmen’s Reading Comprehension Skill was “Passing” while their English Language Performance was “Average”. Students had learning difficulties in vocabulary, comprehension and articulation. The university had no Reading Laboratory. Individual reading and cooperative development were the most utilized teaching strategies while argumentation and debate were the least utilized. There were no standardized reading materials but the students were interested and open to modern methods of learning.
The freshmen profile had no significant effect to their Reading Comprehension Skill and English Language Performance. Their Reading Comprehension Skill significantly affected their English Language Performance.
The university may construct a Reading Laboratory equipped with facilities and reading materials. The language instructors may regularly undergo trainings and seminars on English Language Teaching. The Students must learn to improve their reading skills and spend more time reading informational books to broaden their knowledge and skills.
