Abstract

The maritime industry drives global economic growth and relies on a skilled workforce focused on safety. The study aimed to compare risk awareness levels between STEM and Non-STEM maritime cadets at SMET. 120 first-year cadets completed a validated questionnaire. Results indicated a moderate level of risk awareness among both groups, slightly higher in STEM. Statistical analysis, including an Independent Samples T-Test, found no significant difference. This highlights the importance of early safety training for all cadets to ensure consistent maritime safety practices. It also underlines the essential of integrating Pre-Baccalaureate maritime education into the curriculum to enhance risk awareness. As cadets progress, their awareness is expected to grow, improving safety practices in the maritime sector. In

conclusion, this research highlights the baseline awareness of first-year maritime cadets and emphasizes the ongoing need for safety education throughout their academic and professional careers to prepare them to effectively manage onboard risks and contribute to a safer maritime industry.
