Abstract

Dharavi, urban slum in Mumbai, infamous as the biggest urban slum in Asia came into limelight in 2008 whenBritish film “Slumdog Millionaire” narrating the story of 18-year-old Jamal Malik from Dharavi slums of Mumbai portraying neglect and abuse of the urban slum dwellers and their surviving challenges, won eight Academy Awards including the Best Picture and Best Directordriving attention to a space that wasalways overlooked.
The same Dharaviemerged in 2020 as theprototype for the policymakers and public health practitioner in emerging economies like Brazil,South Africa and Philippinesfor containing the spread of Covid-19 in densely packed urban slum communities in resource-limited democratic settings with its “Dharavi Model” ofdogged& innovative approach of "Chase the virus".
