Abstract

Abstract - This paper proposes a simple probabilistic method for evaluating the economic benefit from the use of a mobile unit substation (MUS) in high voltage load stations (HVLSƒ??s). The proposed method uses a combined Markov model for representing Class I and Class II transformer failures (minor and major failures) to evaluate the benefit from the MUS. The combined Markov model is convolved with the MUS model to produce simple formulae for calculating the MUS benefits. The paper also extends the previously used method for assessing the MUS benefit to handle the general case where the MUS is used at one-unit and two-unit transformer stations in order to compare the results of the two methods. A sample of the Hydro Oneƒ??s HVLSƒ??s is used to illustrate the proposed method and to compare the results of the two methods of assessment.
